1948 - National Assistance Act

Policy Field:
Long-term Care
Major Implications of the Reform:
  • Local authorities are responsible for the provision of means-tested residential accommodations (nursing home) for people who need care and assistance. Domiciliary services are also provided (meals and home help).
  • People receiving nursing care from the National Health Service (NHS), receive this care free of charge. NHS also provides free long-term care in hospitals (mainly geriatric and psychiatric; many former poor law infirmaries).
