2002 - Amendment of the Non-Discrimination Act for Men and Women Concerning Employment and Parental Leave and the Act on Childcare Leave

Policy Field:
Family & Children
Maternity Protection
Major Implications of the Reform:

- Maternity, parental, and paternity leave were transformed into a single "flexible maternity/paternity and parental leave."
- Employees were entitled to take four weeks of maternity leave before and 14 weeks after a birth. Within these 14 weeks, the father was entitled to take two weeks of paternity leave. After this period, 32 weeks of leave could be shared freely by the parents. Eight to 13 weeks of the 32 weeks could be taken up to the ninth birthday of the child, but the leave had to be taken in a continuous period.
